Tea Box Design Back for Second Year
My Cup of Tea in partnership with the Orange Mound Arts Council has again issued a Request for Proposal seeking a Black artist with an Orange Mound connection to design the next Memphis-themed tea box. The inaugural contest in 2021 resulted in Orange Mound native, Andre Miller being chosen to create the artwork.
Miller’s “Three Kings” oil painting depicted W.C Handy, B.B. King, and Elvis Presley against a Memphis skyline. The artwork was used as the cover of the tea box containing Sippin’ Soul, an orange grapefruit herbal blend. The limited-edition tea sold out within six weeks of being offered to the public.
To enter, artists must upload a portfolio no later than September 1st at 11:59 PM. A diverse committee including representatives from My Cup of Tea and the Orange Mound Arts Council will review the submissions and choose the artist to create box art.
The winning artist will receive $1,000, an approximately 200-word biography printed on the box, and retention of the original artwork. My Cup of Tea will issue 500 boxes of tea in mid to late October. The variety and flavor of the tea to be featured in the box have not been determined.
